Why my massage is different

Often, massage clients feel disappointed and upset after their treatment and they usually point out that: ’It's not that the therapist had ‘wooden’ hands or massaged without commitment, only interested to finish the job quickly and run for a cup of coffee, but rather, the massage didn’t help me and the pain hasn't been removed permanently’. Sometimes, the clients feel relief for a short while, but the problem comes back, usually as soon as the same or the next day.

So they start to question: 'Is this failure due to a lack of knowledge and skills, or is it due to the nature of my condition? Is the problem simply untreatable by massage and I must get used to living with it?'

In my opinion, backed with years of experience, only the poor skills and the lack of individual approach from therapists are to blame.

My beginning…

I sincerely admit, that many years ago, at the very beginning of my practice, I worked like a ‘robot’. I simply tried to apply the skills I had learnt, labeled as ‘Swedish massage’, ‘Indian head massage’, etc. onto my clients. This worked as long as they came for relaxation only, and still did not relax them as effectively as I could have done with my present skills. But when people came with individual postural and tension problems and local pain and chronic strain symptoms, I could not help much.

To my credit, I really wanted to make a change for my clients and for myself, so I decided to take steps forward. Since that time I have completed the best schools and courses available in my field, and completely changed my approach to my clients.

The Interview and the Assessment

When you start working with a client, it is crucial to  begin with a proper interview, which includes questions about: the client's job, the type of exercise they do, their daily routine, habits, past injuries, diet, sleeping arrangements, and so on. Even seemingly insignificant pieces of information like: the kind of pillow they sleep on, or the way they place their feet when in a sitting position, are very important. A good therapist must bear this entire spectrum of data in mind when giving treatment.

I never omit a postural assessment, which means looking at the client’s posture from different angles and analyzing the shape of his/her body. This helps to find weakened muscles and such knowledge enables me to really help the person.

Treatment

The treatment always depends on the client’s individual problems. For example, if a person comes for relaxation massage, he or she must feel some discomfort in the muscles, which is usually not from temporary tiredness and overworked muscles, which will soon go away. Rather, the problem is often due to chronic tension in particular muscles and tendons. In such cases, proper techniques must be applied to remove the root of the problem.

These ‘proper techniques’ are all the techniques I have learnt from such passionate therapists and doctors like: Rudolf Breusse, Dieter Dorn, Lawrence H. Jones, Leon Chaitov, Inge Dougans, Mel Cash and many more.  There are also my own individual techniques, which naturally come with experience to each truly practicing and sincerely studying therapist.

I always strive to use only the techniques which will be helpful according to the client’s situation. This saves my time, the client’s time and the client's money, and simultaneously the client feels satisfied and this enables him or her to build up trust for the therapist. This trust and respect is what truly matters in my job.

Usually during the treatment more ‘discoveries’ of potential bodily problems are made, especially when the therapist has good palpation skills as well as intuition. Due to this fact, and also because people often come to a therapist after many months or years of neglecting their pains and aches, for which, in some cases, more than one treatment is recommended, the whole process of recovery is longer.  Although sometimes even an overnight transformation is possible, usually there is a lot of hard work involved; but the final result is the client’s full satisfaction.

Exercise Afterwards

Even though the treatment is highly effective, a change of bad habits and exercise can prolong optimal health even more. I always give people advice on their posture, and point out the things they should pay attention to. I also give individual exercises to clients, who need to stretch or strengthen some of their muscles in order to keep a proper posture. All these changes require some effort but they perfectly combine with my treatment; they demand some determination but really make a difference.
